Self Care Practices for Massage Therapists & Their Clients

Part of being alive is dealing with stress.  No one is completely without stress but the way we manage the stress is what will determine if it impacts us negatively.  This course will discuss 1) structural/physical stress, 2) biochemical/nutritional stress & 3) emotional/mental stress. We will learn ways to manage these types of stress for ourselves and our clients. Solutions such as self myo-fascial release techniques, healthy dietary choices (based on individual metabolic type) and mindfulness practices such as yoga, qigong and breathwork practices will be explored.

Day 1-

  • Types of Stress & How They Affect the Body

  • Physical/Structural Stress Management Solutions

  • SMFR & Corrective Stretches & Exercises

Day 2-

  • Biochemical/Nutritional Stress Management Solutions

  • Emotional/Mental Stress Management Solutions

  • Working Out vs Working In Practices including Yoga, Qigong and Breath Work


Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy and Myofascial Release Techniques for Craniofacial Pain & Headaches

Upon completion of this course, massage therapists will be able to identify common imbalances and pain patterns of the neck and head and will be able to implement massage techniques and corrective exercises to help alleviate common sources of pain and imbalance. Massage techniques include neuromuscular therapy, joint mobilization, myofascial release cranio-sacral techniques and energy balancing. You will also learn corrective stretches & exercises that can be given to clients to help empower them to continue improving between sessions.

***This will include intra-oral techniques using gloved hands***.

Day 1

  • Theory & Principles of NMT & Myofascial Release specific to Cranio Sacral Work

  • Cranial Analysis & Alignment of the Spine

  • Anatomy of the Head & Neck

  • How to Create a Treatment Plan

  • Massage Protocols for Neck, Sinuses and Eyes (this will include accessing muscles of the anterior throat to alleviate chronic tension from whiplash injuries)– Hands On

  • Self Myofascial Release Techniques for the Head & Neck

Day 2

  • Brief Review of Assessment, Anatomy & Creating Treatment Plans

  • Understanding the Autonomic Nervous System

  • Massage Protocol for Cranio Sacral Work (we will enter the mouth using gloves to access the muscles and bones of the face and mouth)– Hands On

  • Corrective Stretches for the Head & Neck

  • Corrective Exercises for the Head & Neck

Muscle imbalances, whether caused from acute injury or repetitive use, create faulty recruitment patterns in the nervous system. This can set your clients up for long term chronic pain and dysfunctional movement. This course will give you practical techniques to break up adhesions where extra tissue has been laid down (which happens as a protective mechanism to stabilize the joint) as well as corrective exercises to help stabilize the joint so that the body does not continue to lay down extra fascial tissue. The 7 primal movement patterns will be addressed (squat, lunge, bend, push, pull, twist and gait).

Day 1

  • Massage Techniques to Correct Muscle Imbalances (Hands On)

  • Mindfulness In Movement

  • Corrective Stretches & Exercises to Correct Imbalances

 

Day 2

  • Massage Techniques to Correct Imbalances (Hands On)

  • Seven Primal Movement Patterns

  • Corrective Stretches & Exercises to Correct Imbalances

This class is packed full or information that will help you better understand pain patterns. Students will learn to identify suboptimal posture and perform manual therapy techniques including neuromuscular therapy, joint mobilization and myofascial release. You will also learn corrective exercises that can be given to clients to help empower them to continue improving between sessions.

These classes are continuing education credits for massage therapists but anyone in the movement field such as yoga therapists, personal trainers and dancers will benefit from the information in this course. If you do not have a license to practice hands on therapy, alternate techniques such a Self Myofascial Release will be discussed.

Space is limited to 10 students and a few massage tables will need to be provided. 2 are currently available for use.

Instructor Gwyn Davis is a licensed massage therapist who graduated from Massage School in 2003. She has had an active private practice for 20 years’ operating out Chiropractic Offices, Wellness Centers and Private Gyms/Studios. She is an OBPVS approved instructor through Spirit House Yoga and is certified in Holistic Exercise and Lifestyle Coaching, Functional Medicine and Qigong.
