My Story
I was born and raised in Oklahoma City and graduated in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. During college, I worked in the biopsychology lab researching personality traits and the development of hypertension. However, my interests took a turn toward studying anatomy and human movement which drew me into fitness. I first became a group exercise instructor obtaining certifications with Reebok Cycle, Body Pump, Resist-A-Ball, and others. After 6 months of instructing, I began working as a personal trainer at Gold's Gym in Northern Virginia. Early on, my primary focus was on weight loss and coaching female runners but I started seeing the connection between improper movement patterns and injuries. This led me to study bodywork so I received a diploma in massage. I trained in anatomy, kinesiology, and several styles of massage including neuromuscular therapy, Swedish, deep tissue, sports, trigger point therapy, and myofascial release. I have gone on to take courses in medical massage, passive stretching techniques, body reading, and higher-level neuromuscular therapy.
After massage school, I moved to beautiful Southern California and split my time between massage therapy and personal training. I took a personal interest in nutrition and supplementation, and my trusted mentor and friend gave me a book by Paul Chek: "How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy!" I was so inspired that I attended the certification program offered by the CHEK Institute for Holistic Lifestyle Coaching. With this certification, I came to the understanding that to be truly fit and healthy, exercise cannot be the only focus. Factors such as stress, diet, thoughts, breathing, and sleep must all be addressed. This brought me full circle back to my foundational training in psychology.
In 2009 I moved back to Oklahoma and began blending my services of corrective exercise, massage and lifestyle coaching through the company I had founded in California, Mind and Body Fitness Connections. Soon I began branching out into new aspects of the wellness business by getting certified in Functional Medicine, helping me to better understand how to help clients get to the root of chronic pain and illness.
In 2019 I began taking meditation classes at a local monastery and revisiting my childhood past times in dance, writing and art. Through this exploration I recognized that to connect to source and return to our child like state of joy we must access our creative spirit and quiet ourselves with meditation, which ultimately led me to pursue a certification as a Qigong Instructor. As a result of these discoveries I opened the Zen Zone division of Mind and Body Fitness Connections with the idea of creating an atmosphere where people could shake off the stress and worries of the day. I recognized the importance for people to have a place where they can renew their spirit through creative outlets such as dance, art, music, and literature and quiet their minds with meditative practices. Together these services, classes and events are reaching people at every level of healing and and helping educate them about ways to achieve greater physical, emotional and spiritual health.
